‘Battle of Aiken’ events set for annual weekend
This year’s Battle of Aiken events, set for Feb. 21-23, will include a return engagement of weaponry that was in use by generations after Confederate and Union forces clashed in the Aiken area.
The annual reenactment of local combat from February 1865 dates back to 1995 and normally focuses on customs, weapons, tactics, food, clothing and other aspects of local life during the war, but the 2024 presentation also included demonstrations and talks involving weaponry that U.S. forces used from the 1940s through the 1990s.
This year’s event is to include another look at some of the same equipment in a “military timeline,” including a demonstration of a flamethrower that was used in battle during World War II — “quite spectacular,” in the words of historian Pete Peters, one of the Aiken event’s primary organizers.
