But progress comes slow in American when it comes at all.
In 1904, the city of Memphis erected a sculpture of Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821–1877) atop a large concrete pedestal in what it then named Forrest Park. The remains of he and his wife were interred underneath.
Forrest was a Confederate general, war criminal, slave trader in Memphis, and is widely believed to have served as the first grand wizard or leader of the Ku Klux Klan. Similar actions were carried out in a thousand places across the South. White Southerners may have lost the War, but they won the day. They still held power over African Americans and these monuments to slave holding insurrectionists–Forrest, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, etc.–proved it.
Enlightened Memphians advocated for removal of the Forrest statue–and others in the city glorifying… (Enough of this tripe… – DD)
