A modest way to fix, in part, a gross and embarrassing overreaction.
"Why just GOP members?" Part 3
In Part 2 of this series I said that the Arizona Division of the SCV is only reaching out to certain GOP House members, with our calls to fix the overreach that occurred with the Naming Commission. I then said this: "Why just GOP members? I’ll explain that in Part 3."
Here’s why. The SCV is a non-partisan organization. It is not allowed to take political sides. But it’s also not required to be stupid and naeve, either.
There is a clear partisan divide between the GOP and the Democrats, when it comes to their willingess to show tolerance and respect to Confederate heritage. There is strong, even majority support for it within the GOP contingent on Capitol Hill. There is ZERO support among the Democrats.
There is objective evidence to support that assertion.
There have been two attempts to pass amendments to NDAAs which would have remedied at least some of the overreach of the Naming Commission. One, by former Congressman Bob Good of Virginia in the summer of 2023, would have amended the FY 2024 NDAA to prevent further federal expenditures on implementing Naming Commission recommendations. (Amendment #47). The following year, Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia submitted an amendment to the FY 2025 NDAA that would have returned the Reconciliation Memorial to Arlington National Cemetery. (Amendment #44).
Both amendments failed. Each amendment received a strong majority of GOP votes, but not a single Democrat vote! Once could be a coincidence, but…
