Alabama Senator Moves to Protect Our Heritage
State Senator re-files bill to make removing Confederate monuments prohibitively expensive

Since 2017, any county or municipality looking to rid itself of Confederate memorials on public property has had to pay a price—the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act levies a $25,000 fine on such removals.
But State Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Tuscaloosa, has for years been pitching a bill that would change the fine from a relatively small one-time hit to a city’s budget to a constant drain on taxpayer money.
Allen’s proposed amendment to the the act, pre-filed this year as Senate Bill 6, would change the financial penalty from a one-time fee of $25,000 to a daily fee of $5,000. So instead of a one-time line item of $25,000, a municipality looking to permanently remove a monument or memorial would be looking at an annual allocation of $1,825,000. It would cost a municipality $36.5 million to keep a monument removed for 20 years.
The bill does not explicitly reference Confederate monuments, as it would create the penalty for the removal of any statute or memorial that has been in place on public property for 40 years or more. Allen’s bill stems from a bill originally brought by State Rep. Mike Holmes, R-Wetumpka, who told APR in 2021 that the bill was drafted in part by…
Thank you Senator Allen. We need more politicians like you with the guts to stand up and protect our heritage. The SPLC is a communist hate organization that should not even exist, and it should especially not be headquartered in "The Heart of Dixie". We must continue to push back against the false narrative of the War of Northern Aggression being fought over slavery. That fairly tale is easily debunked, but academia, Hollywood, and the media control the propaganda industry and have indoctrinated millions into believing a lie. The other side doesn't speak about the many free blacks who owned slaves, or that more than 429,000 slaves were in the Union during the War, or that Lincoln endorsed the Corwin Amendment which would have forever made it illegal to abolish slavery if the seceded States would return to the Union and ratify it.
Our Confederate dead, consisting of white, black, Indian, Mexican, and more, fought with honor in defense of their homes and families and for independence from a tyrannical government. It is only fitting that monuments be in place to honor their sacrifices. Unlike their Union counterparts, they did not wage war upon innocent civilians, but fought with honor and determination, as did our colonial ancestors, and for the same reasons. Our monuments must be protected, and heavy fines need to be placed upon those who would remove or destroy them.
