Almost Half of South Carolinia Says Civil War Likely

In South Carolina, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, a new poll reveals that almost half of its residents believe a second civil war could be on the horizon — a stark indicator of the growing sense of division and unrest across the nation ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
A Winthrop University poll released Oct. 2 found 47 percent of South Carolina adults hold the opinion that another civil war in America is either very likely or somewhat likely to erupt within the next decade.
The findings were even more divided when broken down by political ideology.
Republicans in the Palmetto State were more inclined (53 percent) than Democrats (41 percent) to believe some sort of domestic conflict will break out in the U.S. more than 160 years after the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter in the mouth of the Charleston Harbor.
The results raise larger questions about the fabric of a nation and adds another layer to an existential debate over whether polarization has pushed the country to a tipping point where the divide has become insurmountable.
