Black Confederates?
Yes, They Did Exist
Black Confederates? Yes, They Did Exist
It is stated by so-called “historians” who align themselves with the “North was right, South was wrong” point of view that the concept of Black Confederates is a myth and a fable. Oh, they might concede that there were some who were cooks, and some who performed menial tasks, but putting on the uniform, taking up guns, and actually fighting? They deny that this ever happened. Well, documentation and eyewitness accounts to the contrary prove them wrong.
Here is an interesting post by the SCV https://scv.org/contributed-works/black-confederates/ which gives first hand accounts of Black Confederates, as well as a list of books on the subject. One example from this page gives us the following:
Frederick Douglas reported, “There are at the present moment many Colored men in the Confederate Army doing duty not only as cooks, servants and laborers, but real soldiers, having musket on their shoulders, and bullets in their pockets, ready to shoot down any loyal troops and do all that soldiers may do to destroy the Federal government and build up that of the rebels.”
