Fort Fisher celebrates 160th anniversary, $20M visitor center launch
Historians, Civil War buffs, and people curious about what happened at one of the largest forts ever built in the United States will gather (gathered) at the Fort Fisher State Historical Site on Saturday (Jan 9) to observe the 160th anniversary of the Confederacy’s so-called “Gibraltar” being stormed by Union forces and to help dedicate a new $20 million visitors center.
Rain is in the forecast, but Jim Steele, manager of the 200-acre facility, says the dedication event will include a firing of a huge cannon (a Civil War replica), special guided tours, lectures and living history demonstrations focusing on life in 1860s North Carolina…
· New gun mounts with four additional cannons (they are aluminum replicas)
