Enforce the SC Heritage Act for Lee monument
Post and Courier metro columnist Brian Hicks wrote a column Sunday regarding the American Heritage Association's efforts to enforce the South Carolina Heritage Act against the Charleston County School Board for allowing the Robert E. Lee monument to be removed from the grounds of the School for Math and Science.
He avoided all legal analysis, as it is clear that Confederate monuments are protected by state law and there is no more well-known Confederate general than Robert E. Lee.
Our association did file this lawsuit previously, as he noted, but voluntarily withdrew it and recently refiled it with a stronger plaintiff, the Charleston ladies of the Daughters of the Confederacy, who erected the monument at the school in 1947.
While Mr. Hicks claims that S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson did not come to our aid, that is false.
In a February 2022 article in The Post and Courier, Mr. Wilson made it clear that he believed the removal of the Lee monument was a violation of the Heritage Act and we expect his office to file an amicus brief with
