Town of Edenton, Chowan County propose agreement to move Confederate monument to courthouse green
The town of Edenton and the Chowan Board of Commissioners have apparently agreed to transfer ownership of the town's Confederate Monument to Chowan County and move the statue to the green at the county courthouse.
A proposed resolution posted on the town of Edenton's Facebook page Thursday said an agreement is in place to move the monument at town expense to behind the Chowan County Courthouse on Broad Street. The monument was originally located on the courthouse green but moved on June 1, 1961, to its current site in the middle of the fifth block of Broad Street.
The post also said a special joint meeting of Edenton Town Council and the Chowan Board of Commissioners is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers to approve a memorandum of understanding and agreement between the town and county about the monument.
The agreement apparently has the support of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and other plaintiffs who sued to block the town from moving the monument from its current site on South Broad Street.
