A recent radar search of the ground underneath a Confederate marker in Manchester identified as many as 742 bodies at the site, a city spokesperson told The Times-Dispatch on Friday.
The site, located on Wise Street in Swansboro, contains “472 probable and 270 possible graves,” the spokesperson said. And although both the “physical layout of the graves and historical records” suggest the site was used as a military burial ground in 1861 and 1862, officials have no way of knowing who, exactly, is interred there.
“Unfortunately, records of the individuals buried at the site do not exist,” the spokesperson said.
The site was established in 1857 by officials with the city of Manchester, which had not yet been annexed by Richmond. It was used long before the nearby Maury Cemetery was established in 1874, the spokesperson said.
The stone marker was erected in 1939 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and is dedicated to Confederate soldiers who died in a wartime hospital across the street. Times-Dispatch coverage of the installation suggested it was common knowledge that bodies were buried there.
