Monument protests go without incident
Last Saturday’s planned visit by two outside pro-Confederate groups went without incident.
In fact, it appeared the number of law enforcement officers and observers outnumbered the participants, for or against the monument, throughout the morning.
Two groups were scheduled to be in Edenton to protest at the town’s Confederate monument to support of keeping the monument either at its current Broad Street location or relocating the monument to county-owned property, also downtown. The groups, Southern Independence Association, out of Goodletsville, Tennessee, and the Tarheel Flaggers, of China Grove, had each announced plans to be in Edenton.
The planned visit prompted concerns from Edenton town leaders and law enforcement officials, but only about six outside protesters carrying Confederate battle flags had arrived by 1 pm. The event began at 11 a.m. and no incidents were reported by police.
Both organizations state on their websites that they travel to counties and towns facing contested Confederate monuments to demonstrate by carrying the Confederate battle flag. Edenton town officials announced in the days leading up to the protest that…
