NAACP condemns Confederate Heritage Month billboard on U.S. 29 in Culpeper

The local chapter of the NAACP is denouncing a billboard on U.S. 29 in Culpeper County celebrating Confederate Heritage Month.
The billboard is located in the 10000 block of James Madison Highway near several car dealerships on a busy stretch of U.S. 29 between Charlottesville and Northern Virginia.
In a news release issued late last week, the NAACP Culpeper branch condemned the billboard, saying any tribute to the Confederacy "is not a positive or reverent reflection of history."
"It is an intentional glorification of a legacy rooted in the defense of slavery, white supremacy and the violent subjugation of Black lives," Culpeper NAACP President Kaleb J. Hackley said in a release.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans told InsideNoVa the billboard program is new in Virginia but the organization has placed other billboards around the country.
“All history needs to be remembered, and we as southerners do not believe that our history and heritage should be erased,” Jamie Graham, Army of Northern Virginia Deputy Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, told The Culpeper Times.
