County removes 2021 plaques from Confederate statue
The Jackson County Board of Commissioners this week had the “compromise plaques” removed from Sylva Sam, the Confederate statue on their Courthouse steps overlooking Sylva’s West Main Street.
“The board members wanted them removed so we just took them down,” County Manager Kevin King said.
There was no public comment, discussion in board meetings or vote by the commissioners on the topic. According to Board Chair Mark Letson, commissioners called each other in reaching a decision to overturn a 3-2 vote in 2021 by that crop of commissioners.
“It’s not required to vote,” King said. “Not according to the county attorney. That’s a piece of public property that we manage on a daily basis.”
2020 trouble
The statue was the center of controversy in 2020 protests following the death of an African-American man, George Floyd, at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
In May 2021, the Board of Commissioners approved a measure to alter the base of the statue. The board voted 4-1 for three bronze plaques to cover the Confederate battle flag and the words “Our heroes of the Confederacy” on the pedestal.
