Ceremony Honors Confederate Veterans at Indian Mound Cemetery, Western Virginia
Members of the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization (CHCO) joined the Hampshire County Historical Society this past Saturday, for the annual Decoration Day ceremony at Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney. This event, which has been a tradition since the early 1990s, serves to honor and pray for the Confederate veterans buried at the site.
The ceremony took place at a significant historical landmark—the first Confederate monument erected in the United States after the Civil War in 1867. This monument stands as a testament to the local history and the individuals who served during a tumultuous period in American history.
Participants in the event included members of the CHCO, the Hampshire County Historical Society, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Key figures such as Clarence Spiker and his grandson, along with Brenda Hiett, David Judy, Leo “Buddy” Rowan, and Christina Taylor, played instrumental roles in bringing the ceremony to life.
