Shenandoah County School Board votes to appeal federal ruling over Confederate school names
(Olivia Williams, WHSV3) - The Shenandoah County School Board voted unanimously on Thursday night to appeal a federal judge’s ruling ordering the county to remove confederate school names from two public schools.
The board voted 6-0 to retain appellate counsel and pursue an appeal of the final order and judgement issued Aug. 6 by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
The case involves the Virginia State Conference NAACP and others versus the Shenandoah County School Board. A federal judge ruled the school board violated students’ rights when it restored the names of two schools in 2024.
The board’s resolution authorizes appellate counsel to file a notice of appeal, seek a stay or other relief while the appeal is pending and take other necessary actions to pursue the appeal.
Board Vice Chair Whitney Pence said the board believes it has a responsibility to examine the federal courts decision.
