Why Communist Destroyers Erase History

Public memorials and statues serve as a public expression of the people who inhabit the place, of their history, and their heritage. Revolutionary movements often destroy historic memorials and statues as a way of destroying people’s understanding of their history and culture. The communist overlords want to crush all competition for the loyalties of the people, and thus they are determined to leave no trace of a different and happier time. As George Orwell puts it, “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” Orwell describes how history is falsified: “every statue and street and building has been re-named … and that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute.” One of the statues taken down in the 2020 purge of the Southern statues was that of the great American statesman and philosopher from South Carolina, John. C. Calhoun, who died in 1850.
The art historian Alexander Adams argues that destroying monuments under the pretext that we no longer consider them to reflect the social values we want to promote amounts to erasing history, making us “less informed” and “more primitive”. Adams points out that “revolution is inextricably linked to iconoclasm. No revolution takes place without usurping symbols.” Those who went out on the rampage, burning and looting, during the BLM summer of destruction may be viewed by the public as mere vandals, but even when we consider that the BLM riots caused billions of dollars’ worth of damage, there is an even more poisonous element to this than vandalism.
