Debate over Confederate statue continues after years of protest, lawsuits

In the middle of the small North Carolina town of Edenton, a statue stands high above the square. The disagreement begins with how to refer to it. Some would call it a memorial, others would call it a monument. No matter what it's called, since the death of George Floyd, another question has loomed: what should be done with it?

Rod Phillips has been here placing signs to take down the statue, which he refers to as a Confederate monument, “every Saturday morning for three and a half years now.”
He’s part of the Move the Monument Coalition, a group of townspeople who are working to push town leaders to move the marker they say casts a dark shadow over the most prominent location in town.
“If you’re going to install a Confederate monument to send a message, this is the perfect place to put it,” Phillips said.
