Williamson County seal depicting Confederate flag could get legal protection if new bill passes
A bill that would amend the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act could legally protect the seal of Williamson County, which currently depicts the Confederate flag draped over a cannon.
The seal has been under scrutiny since 2020, when a Change.org petition was created and called for the removal of the flag. The petition received more than 12,000 signatures. In 2022, a task force appointed by Williamson County commissioners recommended removing the flag from the seal.
“My point of view is: why are we still living in the past? It’s 2025,” Williamson County resident, Harry Graves, said. “I don’t think we need to represent anything from that era.”
Joe Baugh, who lives in Williamson County, told News 2 that he thought the Confederate flag should stay a part of the official seal.
“I think it is part of our heritage,” Baugh said. “…We have to look at history for what it is.”
