Shenandoah County students, NAACP celebrate ruling on Confederate school names
(Mason Willett, WHSV3) - Students and NAACP supporters gathered Monday to celebrate a federal judge’s ruling that the Shenandoah County School Board violated civil rights law by restoring Confederate names to two of its public schools. Attorneys in the case said the county now faces a costly deadline to comply.
The press conference, held at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, followed a ruling handed down last Thursday. The judge found that the school board violated the U.S. Constitution and federal civil rights laws when it voted in 2024 to restore the Confederate names of two public schools.
Student plaintiff A.D. Carter said he views the ruling as part of a broader civil rights legacy.
“I just want to say that I hope this sets a precedent, that moving forward in our schools, we can remember things like this and days like Thursday that moving forward, we can remember that this is no place for discrimination. This is a place where we can all focus on education and enrichment and moving forward,” Carter said.
