Chowan clears final hurdle to relocating Edenton Confederate monument

Chowan’s commissioners have removed the last roadblock to moving Edenton’s Confederate monument to a new location next to the Chowan County Detention Facility.
The commissioners voted 5-2 Monday night in favor of a memorandum of understanding that relocates the monument from its current location on South Broad Street to a spot next to the Chowan County Detention Facility on nearby Court Street.
Commissioners Larry McLaughlin and Ellis Lawrence cast the opposing votes.
Prior to voting, the commissioners heard public comments from eight residents, five of whom advocated for keeping the monument at its current location or relocating it to Court Street. Three other residents said they wanted the monument removed and disposed of. Town and county officials have said previously that state law forbids disposing of the monument.
Monday’s vote included the terms of a memorandum of understanding between the town and county, which the two parties discussed at a joint meeting in February. The MOU assumes a judge will dismiss the lawsuit brought against the town by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the N.C. Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The February meeting was called to seek public input before both bodies voted on the MOU, which town officials unanimously approved. After a request by two commissioners, the county tabled the matter till its next regular meeting on Monday night.
