The Virginia Museum of the Civil War at New Market Battlefield State Historical Park will hold its 161st Battle of New Market commemoration on Saturday and Sunday with drills, demos, tours, and games.
The museum will remember the battle events on May 15, 1864, with Union and Confederate army drills, guided tours, artillery and medical demonstrations, and games, including a game of rounders. This British schoolyard game evolved into modern-day baseball.
“It’s very hands-on,” said Sarah Hebert, assistant site manager and educator for the museum. “You’re getting a lot of interaction along with all the activities.”
Hebert said the day’s events will feature Union and Confederate encampments, which visitors can walk through.
“We’ll have living historians dressed in period attire with a small military camp set up, so all of our guests will be able to come in and interact with them and ask them about what daily life was like day in, day out in the encampment along with what a battle might have been like,” she said.
