It was a story that went viral: a water tower located in Kingsland, Arkansas, depicting hometown hero Johnny Cash, shot in a “sensitive area” to make it appear as though the Man in Black was letting loose all over town.
The “Johnny Cash Water Tower incident” has been Arkansas legend for almost three years. Now, the story has returned with a musical – and incredibly catchy – update after a talented Cash fan in Minnesota decided this type of ballad was right up Johnny’s alley.
The story KARK 4 News aired in 2022 has made a resurgence in viral video clips found on Instagram and TikTok, which is where musician Cori Kennedy found it and decided the humorous incident deserved a song.
“I saw it in a Reel,” Kennedy explained, “and I was like, ‘that is just the funniest thing’, and it’s like such a Johnny Cash story.”
With guitar in hand, it took her less than an hour to draft up a ballad worthy of the Man in Black, and what started as a fun exercise in song writing quickly exploded – with her video posted on TikTok now close to 15 million views and nearly 2 million likes.
