Off to Youngkin: Senate subcommittee passes bill to end tax exemptions for Confederate-related organizations (VA)

A Virginia Senate subcommittee passed the bill to end tax exemptions for Confederate-related organizations Friday.
House Bill 1699 was passed despite the same legislation being previously vetoed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin in 2024. He said, “Narrowly targeting specific organizations to gain or lose such tax exemptions sets an inappropriate precedent.”
The bill would end tax exemptions for organizations that are tied to the Confederacy including the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the General Organization of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, the Stonewall Jackson Memorial, Incorporated, the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans and the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust, Inc.
This legislation was introduced by Del. Alex Askew (D-95) who said he wants to ensure Virginia resources are not being used to promote division.
