The James Monroe Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), on February 1 unveiled the names of 74 Black patriots from the Northern Neck who fought in the Revolutionary War at a dedication of the new monument on the Courthouse Square in Warsaw.
The list was eight years in the making, according to Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society (NNVHS) executive director Kathy Schuder, who led the search for the patriots, but it opened the door to decades of history that some Black residents say has been obscured for too long.
