This past weekend marked the 160th anniversary and 48th annual re-enactment of the Battle of Natural Bridge, in Woodville.
The event ran the entire weekend, with re-enactors arriving Friday to set up camp; these camps closely resembled those of the period, creating the atmosphere of actually stepping back into time. Among those participating was Faith Goyette, of Perry, who said this was her second year attending as a reenactor. Her boyfriend, she stated, does several different battle re-enactments throughout the South. Takin part, she said, serves as sort of an escape from today.
“I love spending the weekend here, phone free, dressing up and just enjoying the moment and the people,” she said.
As one toured the camp areas, re-enactors (including women and children) actually were living in the camp areas, dressed in handmade 1860’s period merchandise. Campfires were ablaze, with food being cooked (including whole hogs).
Also on hand was a medical tent set up, ready to tend to the sick and wounded soldiers. One of the re-enactors was Major Daniel Parenti, 4th Brigade Field Surgeon, who demonstrated and explained the many medical instruments of the time, how they were used and day to day reality of a field surgeon in a battle environment.
