Somebody Whined! Confederate flag taken down, cemetery board was unaware it was flying (MO)
The Confederate flag that had been flying at the Union Chapel Cemetery south of Fordland has been taken down.
I [Steve Pokin] wrote a Pokin Around column about the flag flying prominently over the rural cemetery, founded in 1891. The column was published Oct. 21.
I had tried to talk to someone on the cemetery board for that story but was unsuccessful. Shirley Smith, president of the board called Monday night — after the column was published — and left this message.
“No one knew that the flag was up down there. We do not know who put it up. But it is no longer up there. Thank you.”
