A ritzy Maine city has been divided over an argument about a homeowner’s decision to replace the traditional slate roof on his home with asphalt tiles.
Steven Farren is at war with the Bangor Historic Preservation Commission after he carried out the renovations without their permission.
The plumber’s $700,000 home is located in the city’s Broadway Historic District, which means he is required to get the committee’s go-ahead before making any changes to the structure.
Farren said he opted to switch out the leaky, 100-year-old slate tiles for asphalt after he was quoted an eye-watering $200,000 to replace the original roof.
The asphalt tiles are easier to maintain and do not require attention from specialists, who often have waitlists of more than a year long, according to Farren.
‘Overall, I think Bangor needs to do better so we can invest wisely into our historic homes instead of asking us to invest more than the houses are worth,’ Farren told Bangor News Daily.
