Army’s Fort Benning gets name back — this time, honoring Nebraska WWI hero

The Georgia army base known since 2023 as Fort Moore is reverting to its former name, Fort Benning — this time, in honor of a Nebraska hero of World War I instead of a Confederate general who took up arms against the United States.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo declaring that Fort Moore would be named Army Cpl. Fred Benning, originally from Norfolk, Nebraska. Benning was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross — the nation’s second-highest award for valor — for his actions in combat.
“CPL Benning was the living embodiment of the Infantryman’s Creed, as he never failed his country’s trust and fought to the objective to triumph for his unit and his country,” Hegseth said in a memo announcing the change.
The move reflects an ongoing effort by the Pentagon to overturn the Biden administration’s 2023 decision to remove names that honored Confederate leaders, including for nine Army bases. The drive to revert to the former names means finding service members with the same name as the Confederate leaders.
