HB1699 – Governor Youngkin neither signs, nor vetoes, but kicks it down the road.
(The Virginia Flaggers) – Last year, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed legislation that specifically targeted Confederate historical societies, aiming to strip them of a longstanding state property tax exemption. The goal of this bill was to drive them off their property, and OUT of the Commonwealth, and force the removal of privately owned monuments and memorials that the left has not been able to get their hands on.
At the deadline last night, Youngkin did not directly sign or veto the bill, but sent it back to the House with an amendment requiring further study before it could be enacted next year. The House can accept the amendment or return the bill as is, at which time the governor must then sign or veto as is. This usually takes place mid-April. We now wait, watch, and pray that it dies there.
We are disappointed that the Governor did not act more decisively to end this discriminatory attack on several of Virginia’s most historic and benevolent societies, instead choosing to possibly extend the life of a bill that was passed with the support of only TWO Republicans in the Virginia legislature.
We need to now concentrate on…
