Robeson County’s Confederate monument one step closer to finding new home
This is going to make some people mad. That’s not my intention, but talking about race relations is just one of those topics that brings tempers to a boil.
First a qualifier: As you can see from my picture here, I am white, which may in some people’s eyes immediately disqualify me from any discussion on Black-White issues.
My earliest ancestors arrived in America either on the Mayflower or the next boat over. I have ancestral connections to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. In other words I am about as white as a person can be.
With that out of the way, I want to tell you about a phone call I got on Monday.
I won’t tell you his name, but the very polite gentleman told me was driving through North Carolina and decided to stop in Lumberton for gas and explore our town a bit while he was here.
He made his way downtown and discovered the Confederate statue standing atop the giant obelisk in front of the Robeson County Courthouse in downtown Lumberton.
