SCSJ updates lawsuit over Edenton’s Confederate monument
The Southern Coalition for Social Justice updated its lawsuit last week that involves a group of residents suing the Town of Edenton and the Chowan County Board of Commissioners over plans to relocate the town’s Confederate monument to the grounds of the county courthouse.
The updated complaint, which was filed Thursday in Chowan Superior Court, seeks preliminary injunctive relief against relocating the monument to another location, a declaratory judgment and a judge’s order declaring certain acts by the defendants Town of Edenton and members of its Town Council null and void, an SCSJ news release states.
The original lawsuit was filed Jan. 3 on behalf of plaintiffs Sherronne Battle, Stella Brothers, Debra Miller, Rod Phillips and the Rev. John R. Shannon, according to an SCSJ news release. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the Town of Edenton, Mayor Hackney High and Town Council members Bob Turner, Samuel Dixon, Aaron Coston, Elton Bond, Craig Miller and Patrick Sellers. Also named as defendants are Chowan County, Board of Commissioners Chairman Bob Kirby and commissioners Larry McLaughlin, Ellis Lawrence, Ron Cummings, Tony Shaffer, Tray Taylor and Chris Evans. All of the elected officials are sued in their official capacity, the lawsuit states.
