The US Civil War or War Between the States v1.0 elevated the Federal government to sovereignty over the States. Properly the United States "are", not "is". Like the European Union, the United States were founded as independent States joining a union to accomplish certain purposes without forfeiting sovereignty. Great Britain did not secede from the EU, it exited. The Texas separatist movement is rightly called "Texit", not secession. Likewise but far more controversially the Confederate States did not secede, they exited. The great wrong of slavery papered over a bowdlerization of Federalism. If a county were to leave a State in the US, that would be secession. If a State were to leave the Federal Union, that would be an exit. 'seems like a quibble, but precision in this terminology debunks a lot of misconceptions and reveals a lot of fraud promulgated by "progressives" about the status of States in the Union.

I have the book The real Lincoln. Says it right. Thomas Jefferson had the problem of trying to get imperfect, self centered humans to keep moral principles in place. He Himself had a few problems with owning slaves and promoting the genocide of Native Americans among others. government isn't now and never has been your friend.
