Roughly 60 people gathered at Rosemary Hill Cemetery Saturday afternoon for a headstone dedication ceremony.
The event, organized by the Sons of Confederate Veterans – John Hance O’Steen Camp No. 770, in conjunction with the Levy County Cemetery Association, was held to commemorate the unmarked confederate grave of William Albert Russell.
Organizers say Russell, who is from Levy County, has been buried in an unmarked grave for nearly 150 years.
“So much has gone into this dedication. Countless hours of research,” said Cmdr. Toby Durden, of SCV, as he addressed attendees at the beginning of the ceremony.
Several of Russell’s family members were present at the event, including one of his last living granddaughters, Irene Russell Green.
While speaking to attendees, Green noted that her grandfather left his family and friends during the 1860s at the age of 39 to serve in the Confederate Army. She added that Russell joined the Ninth Infantry Regiment and fell under Brigadier Gen. Joseph Finegan at the…
