Oil-Rich Province of Alberta May Hold Referendum To Secede From Woke Canada
Canada may have sidestepped, at least for now, the notion of becoming the “51st U.S. state,” but significant political tensions are brewing that could reshape its internal landscape.
On May 5, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced during a livestream that the province may hold a referendum on secession from Canada next year—if a citizen-led petition garners enough support. While Smith emphasized she does not personally support Alberta leaving the country, she said the decision would ultimately rest with its residents.
“I hope we can find a path forward for a strong and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” she said. “But should Ottawa continue to undermine our province as they have over the past decade, that decision will lie with Albertans. I will accept their judgment.”
This comes amid a significant political shift nationally, with the recent election of Mark Carney ushering in a fourth consecutive Labour government.
