Trump Can Squash Antifa By Taking A Page From Teddy Roosevelt’s Playbook
This week marks what would have been Theodore Roosevelt’s 167th birthday. The 26th president came to power at a tumultuous time. America, a growing world superpower, was becoming more active abroad, fueled by the growth of rapid industrialization at home.
But industrialization was not the only thing growing in the American heartland: anarchy, too, was rearing its ugly head. Roosevelt became president in September of 1901 after William McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist. In his first message to Congress just three months after assuming the presidency, Roosevelt opened with the obvious: mourning the death of his predecessor. But he also quickly laid out the dangers facing American society.
“Of the last seven elected Presidents,” Roosevelt somberly recounted, “he is the third who has been murdered.” But while the other killings had mostly been done by mad men or Confederate sympathizers, McKinley had been killed by someone who Roosevelt labeled “utterly depraved”: an anarchist.
